About Heart Rate Training
Turns out, your heartbeat is a pretty big deal. It's actually one of the most important indicators of overall wellness, and is one of the most effective elements of any fitness program. Your heart rate not only controls your body but also the efficiency of your exercise. To get the most out of your physical activity--whether it's walking, dancing or aerobics--you need to make sure you are in your target heart rate zone. To determine your target heart rate, first subtract your age from 220. That's your maximum heart rate. Your target heart rate is roughly 50 to 75 percent of this maximum heart rate. To see how your fitness level is progressing over time, measure and track your resting heart rate--usually between 60 and 100 beats per minute--on a weekly basis. As you become more fit, your resting heart rate will decrease.

Your target heart rate generally encompasses three zones. Exercising in the Active Zone (50 to 60 percent of maximum heart rate) reduces blood pressure and cholesterol and is ideal for fitness beginners or those on a low-intensity program. Almost all calories burned in this zone are fat calories. Reaching the Training Zone (60 to 70 percent of maximum heart rate) requires more intense aerobic activity and is perfect for fitness enthusiasts working to burn maximum calories and fat. Finally, exercising in the Endurance Zone (70 to 80 percent of maximum heart rate) is generally recommended for athlete in training. The primary benefits of this zone are cardiovascular strengthening and elevated caloric burn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than expected, December 26, 2009
This review is from: Sportline 1025 Men's Duo Heart Rate Monitor (Sports)
Good: Accurate Readings, Comfortable Watch, Comfortable Chest Strap, Can get heart rate with or without chest strap, Nice Features, Looks Great.
Bad: Instructions aren't that great. Watch isn't too complicated, so once you learn everything it's actually pretty easy.

Well, I'll start by saying two things: I did not buy this off Amazon and this is my first hr monitor watch. Having said those things, I have researched the heck out of hr monitor watches. I really couldn't decide if I wanted a chest strap or not. I knew the benefits of both and had no idea which one was better. Then I ran into this Sportline 1025.
Whats great about this watch is that you can get your heart rate with or without the strap. For those that don't know much about hr monitors, the strap gives you your heart rate constantly while without the strap you have to press and hold a button on the watch. I really don't want to always wear the strap during specific workouts, and now I don't have to... Read more

As others have reported, the chest strap failed within a week. Sportline sent a new one (received in 3 days) no questions asked (other than my address), no return required, working great for 3 months now. I use mine for pool workouts and I'm amazed it tracks underwater. The user manual is lacking, but with a little patience, you do not need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out. Sensors work great without gel (or spit). Once you understand the principle behind how HR monitors work, you will know how to get the best performance from this (i.e. the touch feature will not track your HR if the back sensor is shorted (by sweat or water) to the front bezel => always use the chest strap for workouts). Call their U.S. based, toll-free CS early so they can help you. I like it so well I just bought another for my brother (birthday).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent in Every Way! Avid User., January 13, 2011
This review is from: Sportline 1025 Men's Duo Heart Rate Monitor (Sports)
I bought the Sportline Duo 1025 with several other name brands. I called Tech Support for each name brand. Sportline answered every time and answered my questions promptly. All the features (especially the Timer)and the price outdid all others. Large digits, large buttons, accuracy and being full-featured far exceeded all other popular brands. SSo I purchased this device and waited for 6 months to write this review. I use the monitor for over an hour workout three or four times a week. I have tried every feature and made every conceivable adjustment. Kudos to Sportline for selling a durable, feature packed product that is also very affordable. People who are really into exercise will learn the buttons because learning a few button combinations is a welcomed challenge. I highly recommend the Sportline Duo 1025 to anyone who wants an easy to read, full-featured, affordable heart rate monitor. Learn it, use it and if necessary -- call their Tech Support and be amazed! I am a... Read more
