It plugs directly into the Wii. Therefore the Wii must be turned on to charge the controllers. The 2 color setup is nice. RED meaning batteries need charged and BLUE when they are charged. I would recommend to those needing a charging system to buy one that plugs into a wall outlet. It takes forever to charge the batteries, longer than the use you get out of it and the Wii has to be left on for the full 12 hours of charge time. That's more wear and tear on the Console than is necessary.
